Fairleigh Dickinson University Gap Year at Tel Aviv University

Under the FDU Freshman Year in Israel Program, students apply to and enroll at Fairleigh Dickinson University as freshmen prior to traveling to Israel for a one- or two-semester academic program for visiting freshmen. While studying in Israel, students can earn up to 18 college credits for one semester or up to 36 college credits for a full academic year. The program includes opportunities to travel in Israel, meet and socialize with Israeli students, and enjoy a vast array of cultural enrichment opportunities.

Transcripts from Tel Aviv University are sent to Fairleigh Dickinson University at the completion of a student’s program in Israel and credits automatically become FDU credits. Unlike many gap-year programs, no college deferral is necessary. Since students enroll at FDU during their freshman year, they are eligible for state, federal and institutional aid to help defray the costs of their studies in Israel. Students pay the same tuition and fees as they would for a semester or academic year at Fairleigh Dickinson University minus their aid package.

Israeli Cultural Politics

A George Washington - Tel Aviv University Program

We are happy to announce the opening of a new study program about a Israeli culture and politics in cooperation between George Washington University and TAU International. The program offers students a semester of studies on location at Tel Aviv University and consists of a variety of courses about Israel's cultural politics that combine theory and practice. The purpose of this program is to augment the usual focus on the history and politics of Israel with cultural courses that would diversify and enrich Israel studies by presenting the subject matter - Israel - in a deeper and more multidimensional way that would result in a fuller understanding of it.

The program's cultural courses consider many of the more traditional political aspects students are exposed to in classes about Israel and the Middle East. But they are served in very different ways. The ideological background of Zionism and the ensuing conflicts and tensions inside Israel and outside of it, without which these courses would mean little, will not only be part of the courses themselves, but will be referenced primarily in the survey course, which all students must take as part of the program.

In addition to lectures, the program will also incorporate "hand-on" learning experiences, including workshops related to the field of study (cinema/theater practicum), field trips to various sites (regions, cities neighborhoods, museums, cultural and political events), and meetings with local political, cultural and community leaders.

The program is open to all students and includes the following courses:

  • Survey of Israeli culture
  • Israeli Literature
  • Israeli Cinema (including a cinema practicum - writing and producing a short film)
  • Israeli Theater
  • Israeli Art
  • History and Memory in Tel Aviv
  • Archeology
  • Politics
  • Hebrew language

Teaching

All courses will be taught by TAU faculty. Students who wish to participate in this program would take a minimum of 4 courses and a maximum of 5 courses from the above listing, one of which must be the survey course. Students who take less than 4 courses would be free to take other TAU courses. All courses will be taught in English.

Administration

The Program will be administered by GW Professor Yaron Peleg together with TAU International. Professor Peleg will serve as an academic advisor to the students in this program and will serve as the coordinator of the program in general. All other aspects of the program, including tuition, transcripts and facilities shall be administered by TAU
